Music theory is the study of the written music and includes
the subjects of notation, melody,
rhythm, harmony, counterpoint, composition, form
and
musical terms.
Theory is an essential component
in a well-rounded musical education because it gives a deeper understanding
of the pieces a student is learning:
such as it's structure, what keys or tonalities are used,
what kind of chords and
scales are used, what the words and signs on the page mean and much
more. Learning theory not only gives a student a higher appreciation
for music but also improves their learning and memorization skills on
their chosen instrument.
Even in the early stages of learning an instrument, a student is learning
some form of simple theory so in a way, it is compulsory. However,
if instrumental or singing exams are to be taken, then most examination
bodies have prerequisites which include either theory or musicianship
exams. The Australian Music Examination Board has the following prerequisites which
must be satisfied before a practical exam certificate can be issued:
| Grade 6 |
Grade 3 |
| Grade 7 |
Grade 4 |
| Grade 8 |
Grade 5 |
Although the early practical exams do not have theory prerequisites
it is still necessary to cover the material of the earlier theory grades.
Therefore, we recommend beginning theory studies and taking the appropriate
exams at least two to three years before taking the grade 6 practical
exam
so
that you receive your practical certificate without delay. It can be
very frustrating for a student to succesfully take the practical
exam but have no certificate to hang on the wall because the theory
component
has not yet been completed.
